What is blood pressure?

Our heart pumps blood continuously throughout our body, supplying oxygen and nutrients to all tissues and bigstock-Doctor-or-nurse-taking-a-patie-15699857vital organs. When the blood flows through the blood vessels, it exerts a pressure against the wall of the vessels. This pressure is called the blood pressure.

The blood pressure needs to remain within normal limits to ensure that adequate blood is supplied to all parts of the body. In certain cases, such as exercise or illness, blood pressure can rise as a normal response in order to provide more blood to the parts of the body that require it. However, in some cases, the blood pressure may rise and remain elevated even when the person is at rest and healthy.

What is the normal blood pressure?

The normal human blood pressure is between 120/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury) and 140/90 mmHg. At this pressure, blood flows at a normal rate into all organs including the kidneys, brain and the heart itself.

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure is defined as a blood pressure that consistently remains higher than 140/90 mmHg. As a result, the rate of blood flow to the vital organs is higher, and can result in damage to these organs.

What are the causes of high blood pressure?

High blood pressure can occur due a number of different causes. However, sometimes, there may be no cause identified. This is called essential hypertension. This often occurs in older individuals, but high blood pressure is not a condition limited to this group. Hypertension can even affect younger individuals in their 20s or 30s and needs investigating and treating. We offer a comprehensive analysis of patients who are diagnosed with hypertension, and provide evidence and guideline based treatments to manage this effectively.

What are the problems with high blood pressure?

Hypertension can increase the patients risk of developing kidney damage, visual loss, cerebrovascular disease (strokes, mini-strokes) and heart attacks. If left untreated, the damage can be irreversible and this can be very serious.
